Welcome to the Children's Cottage, a Montessori primary program serving Danville, Alamo, Walnut Creek, San Ramon and the surrounding areas. We pride ourselves on providing a traditional Montessori environment focusing on strength of character and academic growth.
The Children's Cottage offers a program for the preschool age child. We accept children between the ages of three and six. We have an adult-child ratio of one to six.
We follow the philosophy of Maria Montessori. Our directresses and interns are trained through St. Mary's Early Childhood Masters Degree program and are certified by the American Montessori Society.
The Cottage is directed by Ellen Sanchez, a Smith graduate with a masters in Early Childhood Education and more than two decades of experience.
Over the years, she has developed her program to better prepare students for later years of school, with more work on language and phonics than a typical Montessori program.
All Cottage personel are also experienced in teaching students with a wide variety of capabilities, including the developmentally disabled or fast learners.
Students learn at their own pace, with teacher guidance to ensure they focus on projects and works appropriate to their level.
The preschool child's mind is like a sponge, simply absorbing information. In these early years, a child is defined by the drive to discriminate, observe, compare and evaluate information. The senses are the basis for a child's learning at this stage.
The child has a sensitivity toward certain activities — is internally geared to acquire knowledge from activities that s/he is drawn to. The Montessori Method is designed to complement a child's natural learning style with seven areas of personal development.
